Graduate Record Examination or GRE thoroughly tests a student’s ability in terms of analytical writing, mathematics, verbal reasoning, critical thinking, and vocabulary. GRE is the most widely accepted examination by foreign universities to determine a candidate’s eligibility for a postgraduate program.
Thus, clearing this exam with GRE classes in Chennai can be considered as the gateway to studying in a foreign university. Countries like the USA, Canada, and Singapore require GRE results as part of the admissions process. Apart from graduate schools, many business schools also accept GRE scores and may convert them to equivalent GMAT scores, the generally accepted exam score for management courses. Your score on the GRE is one of the primary factors used by university admissions officers for determining whether to accept you into their programs. As such, it is important to prepare for the GRE and score as highly as you can.
There is no age and qualification based eligibility criteria to take the GRE. The universities accepting a GRE score will however have pre-defined eligibility criteria. Kindly check university websites before applying.

The GRE is a generalized test that isn’t related to any particular discipline or field. It has been designing to evaluate skills that you’ve already picked up over the years. This allows a wide range of universities to use it to benchmark applicants from diverse backgrounds applying to a big mix of degrees. If you were to look at the overall GRE exam pattern, it has 3 sections: Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning, and Quantitative Reasoning.
- Analytical Writing This section tests your ability to analyse facts, dissect arguments, judge the presented evidence and put forth your views in the most convincing and structured manner.
- Verbal Reasoning This section checks your capacity to understand the content author’s perspectives and intentions, prioritise the points made, and connect the dots across various ideas presented, even if they may not necessarily be documented in a coherent manner. This is the tricky section for non-native English speakers.
Quantitative Reasoning This is where you comfort level with numbers and quantitative data is tested. You’ll have to understand the problem and use models and mathematical formulas (from geometry, algebra, arithmentic) to solve them. The good news is that you will have access to a calculator. So no complex mental arithmetic to be done.
The test registration fee for the GRE® is USD 205. If you want to reschedule the date, time, or location of your test, you have to pay a rescheduling fee of USD 50. It must be done at least four days prior to your test appointment. If you cancel your registration no later than four days prior to your test date, you will receive a refund equivalent to half of the original test fee.
The importance of your GRE score varies depending on the institution and degree program. Some programs may consider your test score to be a critical determinant for your admission while others may only consider it a formality. But most institutions have their own formula for incorporating your GRE test scores in their selection process.
The average GRE scores are:
Verbal and Quantitative sections – 150-155 (Range 130-170)
Analytical section – 3.5 (Range 0-6)
